Relay for Life '12

What is RELAY FOR LIFE?
- a worldwide movement that aims to spread the key messages about cancer as well as raise much needed funds for cancer services


So, last weekend i volunteered myself to join this awareness campaign that was held at Youth Park, Penang (btw, i love that place sebab ada roller skate rink dengan skate park yang kinda cool and pagi2 ada guys training capoeira. woot!).
It started at 6pm on Saturday and goes through the night to 10am the next day. Basically, all the people: individuals or team gilir2 berjalan atas track yang ada for that whole 16 hours (Relay for life!), to symbolize the journey of a cancer patient and the non-stop fight against cancer.


What happened there?
- well, there were lots of activities to be done. not necessarily semua orang kena ada atas track that whole 16 hours, so agak rasa penat masa tu went for a rest lah. ada booths for games, foods and other fun stuffs mcm live stage performances, line dancing, aerobics, health screening, flash mob, joget dance, yadda yadda yaddaaa


- At 6pm the relay started with OPENING LAP - The Survivors' Lap of Honour where the cancer survivors  started the relay for one lap with their family members and then afterwards baru the other relayers started relaying the track

and then the relay started :D

- around 7.30pm ada Place your Luminaria Bags. First of all, The Luminaria was the special ceremony throughout the relay. mula pukul 8 malam. this was the time to remember the loved ones who have died of cancer. Everyone was welcomed to get their own Luminaria bag before it started. semua bags tu afterwards kena letak atas track and start 7.30 semua beg yang ada isi candles dinyalakan. at 8pm the ceremony started, lampu kat situ semua kena padam and semua orang yang ada stay senyap and ingat our loved ones together :')


- i decorated a bag of my own, and that 30 minutes, i sat alone by my bag. i had a moment, masa tu teringat balik dekat arwah opah, dengan senyap sunyi semua, sedar2 tak tahan menangis senyap2 kat situ

"In remembrance of my dearest grandmother who had lost the battle for cancer (May 2010)"

The Luminaria (this was around 7.45pm i think)

- and then, lepas 30 minutes of silence and remembrance, ada Candle Lap. yang ni, the survivors relayed the track with a candle symbolizing the hope for others who's still fighting for cancer. the candles semua was passed around to other relayers sampai dia habis dibakar

Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back!

- lepastu, relayed sampai 9pm, tak dapat nak overnite there because there were no lecturers to supervise us for the whole night and then the next day, sambung balik 7am sampai habis at 10pm

- really had a great time that weekend (eventho sedih tak dapat balik). Mdm Mars said to us that "this is a very great opportunity for you guys to be exposed with this kind of social activities in preparing you as a future teachers, you see" insyaAllah :)

- and nowwww, i am looking forward to join the relay tahun depan kalau keadaan mengizinkan :D
